About Habit of Life

Habit of Life is an HDFC ERGO initiative in partnership with IIT Bombay. It is a nationwide index measuring individual wellbeing on a holistic scale across six fundamental pillars- Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social, Workplace, and Subjective Vitality. Habit of Life is an endeavour to go beyond an assessment of wellbeing, and envision a path for people to identify and embark on individual wellbeing journeys. It is a touchpoint that connects individuals to organisations catering to each element of their wellbeing.

With the idea of integrating wellbeing across three key cohorts- Individual, Institution, and India- Habit of Life is a step towards the vision for a Unified Wellbeing Charter for the country.

About the Wellbeing Assessment

This Wellbeing Assessment is drawn from www.panchkoshawellbeing.in, A joint project of IIT Bombay and HDFC ERGO. It puts a holistic perspective to measuring individual wellbeing and applies a fresh approach to personal wellbeing. The concept builds on Yoga and Ayurvedic Psychology, Positive Psychology, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and accounts for all aspects of wellbeing as potential drivers for living a fulfilled life.

The assessment is based on the concept of “Pancha Kosha,” which refers to the Yogic concept identifying five layers of awareness through which all experience is filtered. An individual’s unique perspective of reality is believed to come from identification with each of the five koshas- Annamaya Kosha (The Food Sheath), Pranamaya Kosha (The Sheath of Vital Life Force Energy), Manomaya Kosha (The Mental Sheath), Vijnanamaya Kosha (The Intellect Sheath), and the Anandamaya Kosha (The Bliss Sheath).

These layers encompass all aspects of existence, from gross to transcendental. Pancha Kosha provides a comprehensive model through which a person’s wellbeing quotient could be addressed. Since pancha kosha encompasses all aspects of being, an individual can be viewed holistically rather than through a more traditional one-dimensional approach to wellbeing.
